I was 7 or 8 years old and at school we were learning our 8 times tables. For homework we had to remember them for a test the next day. I remember being in the kitchen at our house in Para Hills going over and over and over them with my dad. For some reason 8 x 8 stumped me everytime. With a few stern promptings I finally got it.
If you asked me today to recite my 8 times tables I would have a mental blank. But ask me what 8 x 8 is, immediately I would shout out 64.
Today I asked Ailish what she had for homework - 8 times tables was the answer. Immediately I had that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach - that feeling of being all alone in the school yard with no one to play with (that's a whole nother post).
Reminiscent of some 25 years ago, we stood in the kitchen together working through her (our) 8 times tables - this time with a little more compassion and understanding of how hard they can be.

i remember our headmaster, mr. mc cloud came in and taught us our 6 times tables because our teacher went home sick. for some reason i thought that was so cool.
9 times are the killer for me. good luck to the both of you...
Every one that doesn't end in a 0 sucks. I hated the game they made us play where two people stood back to back in front of the whole class then the teacher said "7x6.." and you were meant to turn around and 'shoot' the other person before they shot you. I don't remember EVER shooting someone else.
Not Dee but Mum instead
