HELP!

i've decided to hit santa up for a new lens for my camera (canon 300d slr...i know a little old, maybe that will be on my wishlist to Santa next year)....but being the amateur that I am I'm not really sure what I should be looking for...this will be the first lens I buy that didn't already come with the camera.

i'm looking for a lens for taking portrait shots mainly - inside and out - but is still a little versatile - looking for a lens that is really good for available light

this is were you come in...what do you recommend? what are your experiences with lenses? what's your favourite? which lens do you use the most? what are the limitations of the lens?

all suggestions/thoughts, positive or negative would be much appreciated...i look forward to reading them

I've got three lenses. A macro, a 50mm F1.4 and a zoom lens 28-105mm that stays at F4 all the way through. Ok. So Ashley will probably tell you the same thing, that the 50mm we have is the best all around lens. I use it about 90% of the time. It doesn't zoom, so you have to move around more, but it's the best for portraits. It's sharp, it's clear, and with the right settings you can shoot indoors midday and get super sharp shots. It's amazing. That's the one I would recommend. It is by FAR the best with low light. I use my big zoom (28-105) for the beach so I can zoom in on the kids far away, and also for the halloween pictures, for example, when I need to get a wider angle because can't back up more into the street. macro. just for babies leg hair. Good luck! So exciting!

So Sarah said it all. I also have the 50mm and LOVE it!! I still want a Macro and better wide angle but the 50mm is all I really need for now. Good luck!

i bought the middle of the road one - about $350 i think - i couldn't yet justify, or even afford, the REALLY good one - but i love the one i have - i use it a lot. well...a lot when i'm taking pictures. haven't done it for a while.

i know it is so hard to decide - uncle andy is expert too. love you!

Thanks girls. Those comments were super helpful. The 50mm F1.4 was the lens I was looking at. Nice to know that I am on the right track.
