Why you should check your childs lunch box regularly

Miss A's lunch box has three small compartments on the lid which I don't open unless I'm washing it or putting a cold gel pack in one at summer time. Today for some unknown reason I decided to open one of the compartments.....to my surprise (surprise just isn't a strong enough word) I discovered that she was harbouring a colony of ladybugs.

WHY? Why collect 30 or so ladybugs? At least she was thoughtful enough to give them a number of leaves to munch on.

We marched outside and we set them free, well the ones that were alive.

I then opened up the other two small compartments only to discover more...so we tipped this lot out and as I started to get rid of the leaves she cried STOP..."there are ladybug eggs in those leaves". OH MY GOODNESS...I reacted as if she had just told me that she was harvesting big fat hairy spider eggs.

I have no idea why and for how long she had been collecting these (at least a week) but I have learnt my lesson...lunch boxes get checked EVERYDAY from now on.

Awe mom! She worked so hard to "mother" those bugs, and you just dumped her "babies" outside!?
Seriously, I would have too. You might also begin to check other tiny compartments she might be harboring fugitives in. I was always bringing home rabbits, moles, gophers...

There's one in every family. i wasn't it but my daughter Lizzy LOVES crawly things. i have to empty her pockets before she enters the house. She knows when i say "leave your friends outside!" i am not referring to humans.

I have to check every day just to make sure his recess has been eaten. Mick has been asked to do this job but...I guess part of me should be grateful Mick gets him to and from Kindy at all.
