We are family

This week Kate was in town showing off her new addition to her family, Dane. It's become a bit of a thing that when cousins come to town the smylie girl cousins get together for a girlie evening. No children (babies excluded), no husbands, no Aunts or Uncles.

There are a few essential ingredients that go into making these evenings special.

  1. You must be prepared to talk, talk loud and be able to hold a conversation over the top of 3 other conversations that are going on. Us Smylie girls have got this down to a fine art form.
  2. Comfortable clothing. Thankfully it's not a fashion parade, pj's are acceptable attire for these kinds of evenings.
  3. Food, especially chocolate and lots of it.

So Friday night we gathered at the Soininen's. We caught up with what's been happening in each other's lives. Who's kids have started school/kindy. Caught up on travel stories and travel plans. Who's working/changed jobs/got a promotion. What are our husbands up too. Caught up on the latest gossip going around.

Inevitably a lot of the evening is taken up with baby talk. With so many new little additions to the Smylie family in the last little while and Georgia's delivery date not far off there was the obligatory sharing of birthing stories (hopefully we didn't scare Georgia too much), birthing centre versus maternity hospital; gas versus epidural; natural birth versus c-section.

Time is irrelavent on these evenings and before you know it it's midnight. A good 5 or so hours of catching up would seem enough but if the truth be told we could of probably talked for another 5 hours.

The evening was capped off with the laundry roof falling down...Uncle Youni seemed to take the news reasonably well considering the house is only about 12 months old!!!

Thanks for a great evening girls, I love you all and look forward to our next catch up.

We learnt by sitting at the knees of the original Smylie Girls.
I know it only seems like 12 months but the Soinies have lived there for a few more years than that.
Thanks Aunty Chris and Uncle Jouni for letting us use your house.
It's funny i don't remember too much about what we talked about. But I do remember good times.

Wow, you don't even know how badly I would have loved to be there! Kate and I had such a great time when she visited the states. We could just sit and talk for hours.

Yeah it was a great night. I'm so glad I was able to be there for it. Katie and I didn't get to bed until about 2.30am. We were a bit tired the next day - but it was so worth it! I can't wait til Caitlin's arrives - maybe we can do it again

the first time i read this post i got all homesick for being a part of the fun - all the talk, the food, the late night, all the stories and general merriment.

but i just re-read it and something caught my eye. "...no husbands, NO AUNTS or uncles." it took a second...but then i realized that i am one of them...one of the old folks...I AM AN AUNT...and thereby would not have been included in the festivities with all the cool kids anyway! it took less that a nano second for me to realize that i hate getting old. it sucks!

but as one of the "aunts" i happily pass the torch of love, friendship, and the ability to listen, keep track and take part in 4 conversations at once, to you next generatin of smylie women. you've been taught well.
