So it seems that the new thing to keep as a pet are turtles. Ailish has asked on a number of occasions whether we could get one and I have put off giving her a straight answer by saying "we'll see". The truth is, I had seriously considered getting one for her birthday.
Our introduction into a family pet started when Ingrid bought Ailish a goldfish for her birthday, this fish lasted about the week. We subsequently went through about 4 fish before we figured out how to keep them alive. Having mastered a goldfish we got a dog - so far we haven't had to replace the dog. So now I figure we are ready for a turtle. The turtles at the pet store are a little smaller than the palm of your hand and look quite cute swimming around. I had come around to the idea of a turtle until.... Better Homes & Gardens (BHG) did a segment on turtles which I happened to watch.
To my surprise BHG mentioned that this small, cute turtle grows to the size of a dinner plate and ....the clincher.....they live for about 45 years. This was not the kind of commitment I was ready for. I can deal with the lifespan of a goldfish (they generally have a couple of good years in them), a dog (12-15 years), even kids (I figure they will be out of my house in about 15-20 years) but a turtle....no way. This thing could possibly out live me and where would I put this dinner plate size, swimming reptile.
I have yet to break the news to Ailish. I don't want to crush her little dreams, so for now "we'll see" will be my standard answer to "can we get a turtle?".

Hi Kristie! I will put you on my list of people's blogs to visit. I'm so glad that we are connected now. I just had to say--- I loved The Memory Keeper's Daughter, and I have recommended it to all of my friends. I really wish the husband would have been alive and he could have seen his son reunite with the sister.. but other than that, it was an amazing book. Take care!
we have a box turtle - his name is loyd - he's a sweet little thing - despite the trace elements of salmonilla (sp?) - he won't get much bigger than that of a large man sized palm - and his life span all depends on how often liam feeds him! just a thought!!
love ya, sharry
love to your mum too!
I'm loving your site Kristie. I didn't know there was so much talent for writing in our family. You've put a smile on my face. Love ya.
