A fortnight ago the nightmare started. The conditions were perfect but nobody could have ever predicted the utter devastation that was to ensue.
25 blazes (12 now contained - the others not threatening any properties)
1800+ homes destroyed
7000+ people displaced
181 confirmed deaths with the number to increase over 200
450,000 hectares
1 arson charged with one of the fires that saw 21 people loose their lives
Anyway you put it the numbers are horrific. This is the worst bushfire in Australia's history and there are reports saying the worst bushfire in history.
Those people responsible for such misery should be dealt with harshly and to the full extent of the law.
But it is heartening to see that humanity as a whole have a spirit that will carry them through such terrible times.
Australians have donated in excess of $77 million dollars for the bushfire relief fund and this number will surely increase as communities rally together. Even young children are raising funds through casual days at school. This is an amazing effort given that the economic climate is less than positive.
For the amazing firefighters that have worked tirelessly around the clock, words cannot thank you enough and for those that have lost much, you are in our prayers.

That is SO sad. I heard about those and didn't know if it was anywhere around family. Our prayers are with them too!
This has been discussed around every water cooler here in the States and many efforts are being put in place to help the relief efforts. The news of the out pouring of generosity towards those in need sure beats all the moaning about the economic situation. Thank you for this blog Kristi....love ya...di
