The weekend before Valentines day Spring decided to visit.
The snow was melting, making the grass visible; kids were outside riding their bikes and scooters in t-shirts; and i realised that the days were getting longer.
With the enthusiasm of warmth on our skins we ventured to Sioux City in Iowa, just over an hours drive from us, to learn about Lewis & Clark and their expedition.
Ailish has been studying this topic in social studies over the last few weeks, so we thought a little family field trip would be fun.

First stop was the Sergeant Floyd Monument

The monument sits on the banks of the Missouri River where Sergeant Floyd died from what is now believed as appendicitis. He was the only member of the Lewis & Clark expedition to loose his life.
The view from the monument was vast and beautiful, thanks to the white snow contrasted against the blue sky. From this point you can see into 3 US States - Iowa, Nebraska & South Dakota.

Intermission:

Next we went onto the Lewis & Clark interpretive centre. This was a pretty impressive centre with lots of hands on things for kids, both big and small, to enjoy.

The artwork on the walls was absolutely amazing. The attention to detail and colours just about made you feel like you were in the picture.
We really spent a lot of time in the centre and learnt alot........
* Lewis & Clark had a dog named Seaman,
* the Louisana Purchase cost the government $15m,
* the Native American, Sakagawea, was instrumental in the expedition,
* the expedition took 18 mths to map out and reach the pacific and only 6 months to return.

All in all, it was a really enjoyable, and educational, day out.

Kristi! I was excited to see a blog on here. Looks like you are all having a blast!! :)
yeah! you blogged! :)
This outing looks like an amazing day to spend learning. You all are certainly embracing the American Experience. The kids look so grown up too!
Firstly, *snicker* Seaman.
Secondly, I know some of this stuff from watching Night at the Museum.
Thirdly, Yay!
Looks like great family time well spent. Nothing like a bit of immersion to make you really feel like a tourist. Does Ailish have a project or diorama to do?
