Last night when we checked the weather forecast for today it mentioned snow. The kids were very disappointed when they woke up and snow was nowhere to be seen. But we had plenty to do and we knew that eventually the ground would be covered with downie whiteness, so we went about our day.
First stop Scheels. It's a massive sporting/clothing/gun store here in Sioux Falls and our mission was to stock up on winter gear. The choice was almost endless and the kids just went crazy with trying this jacket on with those gloves....and oh, that jacket has fur on it.....and oh, this has a lego pattern on it. Eventually we narrowed it down for the kids and then moved onto the adult section, where I went crazy and chose a jacket that was gorgeous but Ewan also brought me back to earth with a little talk and I bought a practical jacket as well.
The trolley was overflowing with jackets, pants, gloves, hats, snows, uggs and thermal underwear. There were show boxes on the little ledge underneath the trolley, clothes were spilling over and out of the trolley. Callum chose to wear his bright red jacket and gloves around the store....I'm sure the locals were playing spot the outsiders, we weren't hard to miss.
To the checkout we ventured, and as our stuff was being processed the kids excitedly discovered that snow was falling outside.
Ah man, if you didn't know we were not from around here, the boys constant running outside, dancing in the snow, and running back inside was probably just the neon sign you needed.
Next stop was our new home for the next two years. The kids were excitedly running from room to room, screaming and squealing with excitement. After some inside discovery they couldn't wait to put on their snow gear and head outside. All they wanted to do was have a snowball fight...and lets face it who doesn't want to have a snowball fight.
Enough snow had fallen so that Ewan could scrap it off the driveway and ball it up for the kids only to have them turn on each other with their new weapons.
Having never seen or experienced snow my first impression was it's pretty magical. The snow was light and fluffy to touch and it just brought a serene feeling to everything around. I just loved watching everyone, even Ewan, discover it's joy for the first time.
After laughing and playing around at the house we ventured off to the Subaru car dealership where we had already organised a car. Once inside we were greeted by about 1/2 a dozen men all fascinated by our accents and all too willing to assist.
Final stop, a local furniture store. It's been a dream of mine to just step into a store and just go around and furnish a house in one fowl swoop. The sales man was very patient and answered all our questions. We started out in bedding and ended with the most important purchase.....the TV. But eventually, with every whine from the boys, my initial enthusiam wained and we called it a day.
So it's been a very eventful, long and exciting day with many firsts. Rowan summed up our day with a comment in the elevator "snow is awesome!"

Did you tell them that they are the ones with an accent, not you. Do you have a staircase in your house in line with the front door, I am picturing Ro on a sled at the top of the stairs with the front door open!!
What style home furnishing did you go for? Much white? What does your nice jacket look like?
For the children, the fascination of snow will never wear off. For you, it might come by February. Let's meet somewhere warm--like Florida--we'll be there for the fourth of july.
get ready for 2years of..."i love your accent!" i've been here 24 and have lost a ton of mine and i still get it. oh, and you'll learn not to be offended when thay ask if you're from england!!
i'm loving your reports on the excitement and newness of everything.
love you all...
